During the Black Arts Showcase we spoke with Black Male artists who’ve been recognized in the contemporary art space as fine artists and cultural leaders. They display and demonstrate the importance of a family structure through their work and communal projects.

Historically motherhood has been depicted throughout some of Arts most iconic paintings. Fathers are largely absent in Art History but during this talk you'll receive insight from Antwoine Washington, Darius Steward and Mashaun Ali who capture the importance of fatherhood and the family unit in their work.

Print Making
Join in printmaking demos with Theadis Reagins!

Theadis is a painter and printmaker working from Cleveland, OH. Through acrylic and oil he creates portraits and figurative work reflecting on the iconography and representation of black people in the western world. All of his work comes from a place of curiosity, mystery, and surprise. Reagins work is an invitation for people to investigate the past in new and invigorating ways, a confrontation between contemporary observations and ancient representations. As a printmaker he involves etchings, lithography, and relief. Recurring in those etchings are sensitive and sometimes immediate expressions of portraits, or genre and religious narrative work recalling Rembrandt. Theadis's reliefs feature trios, speaking of the symbol, the figure, and time.

Discussion with Antwoine Washington & Darius Steward
Moderated by Mashaun Ali
2:30-3:45
Antwoine Washington
Antwoine Washington was born in Pontiac, Michigan, a small city located outside of Detroit. His wife, Carlise Washington, and he has two children named Grayson and Luca. Washington received his BA in Studio Art from Southern University and A&M College, Baton Rouge, LA. As a kid he fell in love with drawing Saturday morning cartoons like Tiny Toons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Animaniacs, to name a few. While at Southern, Washington learned more about black history and art in America, further inspiring him to continue the legacy of Harlem Renaissance artists like Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, and Jacob Lawrence. Washington decided to continue to tell stories of the black experience in America through his art. After college he moved to Cleveland, OH with his wife, and began working for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier. While working as a mail carrier he began to get the burning desire to make art again, realizing his dream was to create art full-time. He eventually quit this job and began his journey pursuing a career in art.

Washington's work is inspired by the black experience in America. Through drawing and painting he is focused on creating realistic story telling portraits. While creating bold colorful work showcasing the emotion of what black Americans go through on a day to day basis. The past often seems to remind us of how far we have come as a society, due to our nation’s original sin concerning racial inequalities.

  • Isaiah Williams
Live painting In CAC's Studio 3
As a muralist and painter, I make vibrant and meaningful paintings using a wide range of tools and techniques to bring my artwork to life. I make art that is meant to pull in the viewer. I'm drawn to painting landscapes, people, geometric shapes, and
animals. It is important for me to tell a story in my work because I want to connect with people on a deeper level. As a self-taught artist I'm actively looking for ways to inspire the youth and bring the community closer together through my artistic expression. Art has always been a tool to challenge one’s way of thinking and inspire the next generation.

My art is intended to beautify a space while containing subliminal messages that aim to invoke deep thought within the viewer’s mind. I use a multitude of colors and textures behind every stroke for the purpose of leaving an everlasting impression. I use art as a portal to different realms in my imagination. Balancing my individuality with my Black identity is a part of the process of telling my own story. My body of work stretches all over Cleveland, and it is my desire to have my work all over the world. I am deeply inspired by many of the world-renowned artists before me and I plan to join their ranks. Although my name Is Isaiah, I sign most
of my work by my Instagram name Starbeing.

Wake up. Create. Repeat.

I found my passion and what I truly to believe is my purpose in life after being gifted a camera in 2014. The older I grow the more I appreciate time and just how precious it is. As a photographer I enjoy the chance and making time stand still. Throughout my journey as a photographer thus far I've found my pocket in telling beautiful stories in the form of a photo. The saying a photo says 1000 words couldn't be closer to the truth.

When captured correctly, a great photo can put the viewer right in that moment of time of the photo. As a black photographer I feel it's my duty to highlight the black experience and the humanization of our culture in all aspects.

Cleveland native utilizing moss as a medium from gray& green spaces for moss art, bioactive, terrariums, landscapes, moss gardens & moss accessories (lamps, earrings ect). Our goal is to show terrariums can be used as a mindful practice, provide art therapy, teach the surrounding communities about mosses ecological significance & provide nature enthusiast aesthetically pleasing accent pieces. Promoting sustainable practices by propagating samples of moss so no area suffers from over foraging. Terrariums started as a mindful practice, no thoughts, prior experiences & free of distractions. Just learning to concentrate on creating a moss environment that emulates a piece of Ohio's ecology. Workshop programs are the next step from forging to moss propagation, creating small scale terrariums & larger landscapes or moss gardens. Hopefully Ohio realizes mosses potential, benefits & begins creating spaces around moss in urban areas.
